Vana Sypsa is Professor of Epidemiology and Medical Statistics at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). She graduated from the Department of Mathematics of NKUA, holds a Master's degree in Biometrics (University of Reading, UK), a PhD from the Medical School of NKUA and has completed postgraduate training in Infectious Diseases Epidemiology at Imperial College (UK). She teaches in the undergraduate programmes of the School of Medicine, the School of Dentistry and the Department of Biology of the University of Athens, as well as in postgraduate programmes. Her research interests include the epidemiology of infectious diseases, the use of mathematical models to study them and the implementation of interventions for HIV infection and viral hepatitis in vulnerable populations.
She has been invited as an expert by European and international organizations such as the World Health Organization, the European Centre for Disease Prevention & Control (ECDC), the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs & Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the US. She is a member of the Expert Committee on COVID-19, the Scientific Committee of the National Public Health Organisation (EODY) and the Scientific Committee of the Research Unit of the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Centre. She was a member of the Committee appointed by the Ministry of Health for the preparation and implementation of the National Action Plan for the elimination of viral hepatitis. She served as President of the International Society for Clinical Biostatistics in 2019-2020 and was a member of the Executive Committee for several years (2013-2018). She is chair of the Local Organizing Committee of the 45th annual conference of the International Society for Clinical Biostatistics (2024) and co-convenor of the 12th International Conference on Health and Hepatitis Care in Substance Users (2024). She is a principal investigator or member of the scientific team in numerous research projects. She has supervised doctoral candidates who have received scholarships from ELIDEK and IKY. She has evaluated research proposals in Greece and abroad and is a member of the Statistical Reviewers of the Lancet journals. By December 2023, she had published more than 169 papers with over 9,000 citations and h-index equal to 45 based on SCOPUS.ου ετήσιου συνεδρίου της International Society for Clinical Biostatistics (2024) κι συνδιοργανώτρια του 12th International Conference on Health and Hepatitis Care in Substance Users (2024). Έχει επιβλέψει υποψήφιους διδάκτορες που έχουν λάβει υποτροφίες από το ΕΛΙΔΕΚ και το ΙΚΥ για την εκπόνηση της διατριβής τους. Έχει αξιολογήσει ερευνητικές προτάσεις στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό και είναι μέλος της ομάδας των Statistical Reviewers των περιοδικών Lancet. Μέχρι το Δεκέμβριο 2023, είχε δημοσιεύσει περισσότερες από 169 εργασίες με πάνω από 9.000 αναφορές και h-index ίσο με 45 με βάση το SCOPUS.
