Duties and Responsibilities
This is an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral statistician to conduct methodological research in Medical Statistics funded by the Medical Research Council (UK) on “Guidance on sample size when using observational data to develop and validate risk prediction models in health research”. The project is led by Professor Rumana Omar and Dr Gareth Ambler in collaboration with Professors Ian White and Ewout Steyerberg and Dr Shaun Seaman. The main objectives of the project are to provide guidance on sample size for: the development of regression-based risk models in independent data; the internal validation of risk models in independent data; the external validation
of risk models in independent data; the development and validation of risk models in data within larger units, e.g. hospitals; and the development of risk models when using variable selection, the lasso or machine learning techniques.

The post is available immediately and is funded for three years in the first instance.

Key Requirements: Candidates should hold or be close to submitting a PhD (or equivalent qualification) in Statistics, or Medical Statistics. It is essential that the successful candidate has knowledge of a wide range of statistical methods used in medical research, programming skills in Stata or R and strong organisational and communication skills. Applications are particularly welcome from candidates with previous experience in risk prediction modelling research.

If the successful candidate has not yet been awarded their PhD, the appointment will initially be made as Research Assistant on Grade 6 of the UCL salary scale (£30,316 – £31,967 per annum inclusive of London Allowance), and the appointee will be regraded to Research Associate on
completion of the PhD with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
